A Patchwork of Progress

A Patchwork of Progress is the digital centerpiece of the Gates Foundation's 25th anniversary campaign. The project translates decades of global health data — childhood mortality reductions, vaccination milestones, maternal health interventions — into an intimate, scrollable narrative anchored by Malaika, a fictional character whose journey illustrates the real-world impact of these numbers. Inspired by the tactile language of embroidery and textiles, the visualization stitches together individual stories, aggregate data and a 25-year timeline into a single patchwork that invites readers to move between the individual and the collective. Built at Pentagram, New York under the creative direction of partner Giorgia Lupi, the experience extends the foundation's recent rebrand into a data-driven storytelling format, pairing custom illustration with interactive charts and motion to make complex statistics emotionally legible.
